Baitcaster "Drum" reels have been around plenty of years and well favoured by professionals, while the modern day has seen the introduction of a wide range of low profile Baitcasters. These small units are well suited to estuary fishing and / or travelling angler as they are light and compact. Baitcasters need to have a smooth action and low friction spool / mechanism to give the greatest casting length and control to place your bait exactly where you want it.

When shopping for Baitcasters, you need to consider the application. Do you require the larger "Drum" types to take on the bigger fish and hold more or heavier line. Also take a close look at the various mechanisms to ensure that you can get fingers to all the levers and switches with comfort. Finally, take careful count of the number of bearings races, and since we are going near the water, they better be stainless steel.
